Buhari's Daughter's Gifts boxes worth N44million hint political trouble

Buhari’s daughter’s Gifts boxes worth N44million hint political trouble So the president of Nigeria reportedly canceled or should I say postponed the wedding ceremony between his youngest daughter Zahra and Maiduguri Billionaire’s son Ahmed Indimi firstly on account that there’s been too much display of affluence by the groom’s family.

However, there may be another angle to the whole story that is seeming political.

Speaking on the postponement by an inside source, the wedding which was scheduled to hold 3rd and 4th of December was put on hold following the president’s insistent that he was not comfortable with the attention his daughter’s wedding is receiving from the media.

Particular emphasis were made to the customized gift boxes costing around N44million as wedding presents from the groom’s family to both the bride to be and the entire first family.

Earlier on, introduction ceremony had held at Aso villa Abuja between both families on Friday 18th of November with other dignitaries in attendance where dates for the proper wedding ceremony  were fixed. The president however intend for it to be a low key gathering of only family and close friends

Unexpectedly, trouble started during the introduction ceremony when Yataka, sister of the groom in a bit to display their affluence and keep record of the ceremony insisted on taking her mobile phone inside the villa which is contrary to security protocol.

According to sources, Yataka said she wanted to record all the proceedings including the delivery of the boxes made by the French Luxury brand Louis Vuitton despite been informed it was against security protocol.

Struggle soon ensued between the groom’s sister Yataka and security operatives attracting the attention of the first lady of Nasarawa State Mrs Tanko Almakura. This earned her a dislocated arm for which she is reported to be still nursing.

This embarrassing incident incurred the wrath of the president who was displeased with the groom’s family and threatened to return all the gifts and cancel the marriage.

While the president’s emphasis was on the expensive nature of the gifts which he said were incompatible to the nature of his own life style and as such should be returned, the whole situation prompted an investigation into the lives of the Indimis by the president.

Although it is no news to the president that there is a relationship between the Indimis and the former military president Ibrahim Babangida who has never supported his political ambitions, further findings reveal that, daughters of  Mohammed Indimi, the billionaire owner of Oriental Energy have a history of marrying the male children of first families or former heads of states.

An insider said that the Indimi’s first daughter is married to Mohammed Abacha, son of the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria between 1994 and 1998.

Another daughter is married to the first son of former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), who coincidentally overthrew Buhari in a palace coup in 1985, when the latter was Nigeria’s military head of state. He also did not support his campaign that led to his becoming Nigeria’s president in 2015 either.

“The Babangida marriage is blessed with five children. But the marriage as we speak, has hit the rocks and the case is in court. This, added to the fact that Indimi’s business ties with Afren, which is being wound up in the UK after a slew of scandals, has raised questions,” the source said.

However, elders close to the Buhari and Indimi families are at the moment trying to prevail on the president not to return the boxes, as he would be defiling tradition.

In line with the Hausa/Fulani tradition, the boxes, according to sources, contained cash, jewelry, clothes, bags, shoes and other gifts valued at several millions of naira for Zahra and the first family.

They are also working on resolving the tension that has arisen since the crisis so that the wedding could go ahead as planned, if not this weekend, then as soon as possible.

While Buhari might not be favorably disposed to the idea of marrying out his daughter to a wealthy suitor whose background could also be a threat to his political career, the wife of the president and her daughters, who are more liberal, are rooting for the marriage.

Zahra, who is the youngest and most outgoing daughter of the president, is a graduate of medical microbiology from the University of Surrey in the UK.

She is also the ambassador for SCAF, a foundation that aims to minimise the incidence of sickle cell anaemia in Nigeria.
