Military mistakenly bombed Borno IDP Camp. Saying this incidence is tragic and unfortunate will be an understatement.

A fighter jet involved in the counter-terrorism operation in the north east yesterday accidentally fired at a camp in Rann where displaced persons, aid workers and soldiers were killed. Report confirms not fewer than 100 persons were killed while over a 100 others were injured on the ground.

Aid workers confirmed to have been killed include officials of Medicin Sans Frontiers (MSF) also known as Doctors Without Borders and members of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed death of 6 of its members while 13 others were said to be injured.

The forceful push on Boko Haram from Sambisa forest led to most of them shifting base to Kala, a community near Rann where the affected IDP is located.

According to head of theater commander Army Major Gen Lucky Irabor, they had received Intel about the gathering of Boko Haram elements in Kala Balge, a near by community to Rann and after careful coordination, he had instructed the air component of the operations against the insurgency group (which is the Airforce) to go and take care of the problem.

Unfortunately, even though the Airforce had been given coordinates of the area of target, they missed, accidentally bombing the IDP camp in Rann instead. There is the possibility however that fog caused by the change in weather may have played a part in this incidence.

the Nigerian Airforce in a statement yesterday evening by Group Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa said they had begun investigations into the accident. They also admitted that they are saddened by the incidence in which innocent lives were lost and deeply regret that it happened in the first place.

Director of MSF Jean Clement-Cabrol however condemns the attacks.

“This large-scale attack on vulnerable people who have already fled from extreme violence is shocking and unacceptable. The safety of civilians must be respected,” he said.

According to him the attacks on civilians by the military said to be in error is completely unacceptable, noting that this is not the first time the Military is mistakenly killing innocent civilians.
An air force jet in March 2014  mistakenly killed five and wounded several others when it  hit Kayamla village in the Konduga area of Borno in a night raid mistaking it for a Boko Haram camp.

Also, the convoy of a Nigerian Senator was fired on by an air strike jet which mistook the 6-vehicle convoy  under police and military escort for a Boko Haram terrorists.
While the Airforce has continuously described these incidences as operational blunders, it is becoming worrisome that the Airforce is repeatedly allowing operational blunders with human lives.
It is therefore very necessary that the Airforce improve on their training in other to minimize if possible prevent these blunders.
